Daniel Hoffman, one of the foremost experts of the Yiddish, klezmer violin style, is the descendent of a long line of Bessarabian furriers. He was born near Los Angeles and first heard klezmer music played by his father. He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, and studied with Daniel Kobialka, Rafael Bronstein, and Arianne Bronne.
Daniel's professional career focused on the exploration of Eastern European Jewish music, as well as Turkish and Arabic music. He performed in, and composed for numerous theatrical productions with an emphasis on new Jewish theater, including composing new musicals. In 1993, he co-fouinded Davka, an instrumental chamber jazz ensemble which integrates klezmer, Middle-Eastern music, jazz, and modern classical music. Following the success of Davka he founded a second group, th San Francisco Klezmer Experience (The Klez-X), a seven-piece klezmer/jazz big band. Daniel composed new scores for two 1920's era silent films, The Golem and Jewish Luck.
In 2005 Daniel relocated to Tel Aviv, where he performed with a wide variety of ensembles and in theatrical productions at Habima, Israel's National Theatre and co-founded Trio Carpion and the Kalimutke Philharmonia. He performed internationally with the celebrated German-American singer Ute Lemper and Menachem Wiesenberg's Suita Concertante for classical and klezmer violins with the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne. In spring of 2018 Daniel produced the pilot episode of a documentary film series called Violin Around the World, that follows the use of the Italianate violin in traditional and classical music worldwide. The first episode, filmed in Ireland and titled Otherwise It's Just Firewood, screened widely on American PBS stations.
Daniel tragically passed away in 2025. His beautiful and music will always be with us.
