The book is intended for advanced drummers and is also recommended for players in the rhythm section: pianists, bass players, and guitarists. You can drum these rhythms on your knees and count out loud, and then play these cycles with varying notes and pitches on your instrumnets.

The great giants of jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Pat Metheney, Michael Braker, Dave Liebman, Steve Gadd, and Tony Williams are all known for their wide use of polyrhythmic motifs and use of cycles while improvising. The integration of cycles and motifs from the world of polyrhythms turns any improvisation into a "happening" as opposed to a solo bit.
