Overview
The Jewish Community in Copenhagen has for generations been enriched by a splendid music tradition, influenced mainly by musical compositions by German Jewish composers. This highly developed liturgical awareness spread into the homes and was warmly embraced by many families. "Shir Hama'alot" (Ps. 126), which is traditionally sung on the Sabbath and holidays prior to the Grace after Meals, serves as an example of this musical tradition, as it is associated with a wide variety of tunes. Many of those are based upon musical motifs from the holiday prayers, are used on the respective holidays and the Sabbaths preceding them. Other tunes are independent, some of unknown origian, and are sung on other Sabbaths all year round. This CD serves as a historical testimony to the Danish Jewish musical tradition. However, it grew mainly out of an aspiration to preserve the beautiful tunes so that it may serve to pass them on to the families of the younger generation.
Performed by: Ralph Levitan, Pinchas Melchoir, and Ino Schwartz.
